  • Ancient Wisdom (SWE) – For Snow Covered the Northland CD 16.88

    Black Metal

‘For Snow Covered the Northland’ was the first full-length album from the Swedish Black/Doom Metal band Ancient Wisdom, which was formed in 1992 by Markus Norman (also of the band Throne of Ahaz & Bewitched), then under the moniker of Pain, then Ancient.

Ancient Wisdom’s career began with the 1993 cassette ‘In the Eye of the Serpent’ before going on to release 4 albums with the Italian label, Avantgarde Music. Though recorded in 1994, the debut album eventually saw release in 1996 and was notable for its highly atmospheric compositions & melodic slow-mid tempo riffing – a large departure from the all-out speed of many of their contemporaries at the time – and other sounds such as acoustic guitar & keyboards were effectively utilised to heighten the atmosphere.

  • Carpathian Forest (NOR) – Morbid Fascination Of Death LP 28.88

    Black Metal

Originally released in 2001, this is the third album of true Norwegian Black Metal from Carpathian Forest, as 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of this classic album. It was recorded at Sound Suite Studios, produced & mixed by Terje Refsnes (Tristania, Gehenna, Sirenia).

The tracks from this album were recorded at the same time as second album ‘Strange Old Brew’, offers a continuation of the grim Black Metal featured on that album, and takes the line of experimentation ever further to great effect, alongside their trademark brand of raw Black Metal mixed with inspiration from the 80’s Black Metal scene & rock/punk genres overdosing on death and misanthropy.

  • Darkthrone (NOR) – Panzerfaust LP 32.88

    Black Metal

‘Panzerfaust’, Darkthrone’s fifth album was originally released in 1995 on the Norwegian label, Moonfog (the label previously owned by Satyr of Satyricon). The album was recorded similarly to their previous release, ‘Transilvanian Hunger’, in that it was written and recorded solely by Fenriz at his home ‘Necrohell’ studio, with Nocturno Culto later adding vocals.

‘Panzerfaust’ was largely inspired by the works of Celtic Frost, a long time favourite of the Darkthrone guys, and also includes a couple of fast songs in the Bathory style, a follow-on to the faster tempo of the tracks featured on ‘Transilvanian Hunger’. ‘Panzerfaust’ is also notable for including some of the most raw and primal vocals in black metal – completely well suited to the music on display and the misanthropic nature of the band at the time. With its feast of Frost-fuelled riffing, ‘Panzerfaust’ is rightly hailed one of THE classic Darkthrone black metal albums. It also features lyrics written by Varg Vikernes of Burzum.

  • Darkthrone (NOR) – Soulside Journey LP 32.88

    Death Metal

Darkthrone began in the late 80’s as a thrash/death metal act & progressed through technical death/doom metal experimentation to become legends of the black metal world & one of the original leading bands of the Norwegian scene, as well as inspiring a whole generation of metal bands.

Soulside Journey was Darkthrone’s debut studio album after signing with Peaceville Records, following their cult Cromlech demo. It was recorded in 1990 at Sunlight Studios in Sweden with Tomas Skogsberg, notable for his work with Entombed & many other acts over the years. Soulside Journey contained tracks of atmospheric & often technical & complex death metal, with influences ranging from acts such as Autopsy & Death. This was the band’s only death metal album before turning to a more primitive black metal style, but is still rightly regarded as a masterpiece of the genre.

  • Darkthrone (NOR) – Transilvanian Hunger LP 32.88

    Black Metal

Famously written and recorded over a period of just 2 weeks and featuring the iconic photocopied front cover, ’Transilvanian Hunger’ features primitive guitar riffs over a monotonous drum beat creating a feel of hypnotic starkness with its blend of Von, Burzum and Bathory. Over the years the album has become representative of the definitive 90’s Norwegian black metal sound and style, often copied but never bettered over the past 2 decades.

The album was recorded with Fenriz’ ’Necrohell’ studio, and was the first release where the band became a duo, following the departure of guitarist Zephyrous.

    Black Metal

With the highly revered Norwegians remaining ever-dedicated to the art of the riff after 35 years of existence, Darkthrone returns for album number nineteen and a new dose of Metallic godliness. On the back of 2019’s triumphant Old Star opus, the duo of Nocturno Culto & Fenriz present a 41 minute maelstrom of Epic Black Heavy Metal across five sprawling compositions. Organic and dynamic, the album is an exploration of the finest vintage Metal and the best of Doom, all delivered in the unmistakable Darkthrone style (whilst also incorporating instruments such as the Moog to further expand upon these soundscapes).

  • Darkthrone (NOR) ‎– Under A Funeral Moon LP 32.88

    Black Metal

‘Under A Funeral Moon’, Darkthrone’s third album, was originally released by Peaceville in 1993. The album is a bleak reflection of contemporary times, featuring harsh guitar riffage and hateful vocals in what was the band’s first 100% pure black metal opus; a work completely stripped of the death metal traces of former releases & in it’s place, a stark & primitive execution. This was aided by an intentionally lo-fi sound that is powerfully cold and entirely unconcerned with any modern-day aesthetics. ‘Under A Funeral Moon’ is the album that many Darkthrone fans hail as the ultimate manifesto for Black Metal.
