  • Dødheimsgard ‎(NOR) – Kronet Til Konge LP 30.88

    Black Metal

To fans of black metal, Dødheimsgard need no introduction, being as they are one of the great purveyors of the Norwegian Black Metal creative evolution. The band was formed in 1994 by Aldrahn (Thorns) and Vicotnik (Ved Buens Ende). The early incarnation was that of a raw and at times melodic black metal band, with their debut album ‘Kronet Til Konge’ also featuring Darkthrone’s Fenriz on bass. Over time Dødheimsgard became known as one of the premier avantgarde black metal acts after a stylistic shift away from their more old-school origins, as displayed on the band’s most recent output; ‘A Umbra Omega’ and 2023’s universally-lauded magnum opus, ‘Black Medium Current’.

  • Isengard (NOR) – Høstmørke CD 16.88

    Black Metal

‘Høstmørke’, meaning Autumn Darkness, was the second Isengard album, (even though the debut, ‘Vinterskugge’ is a collection of sorts). It was released in 1995 and featured a continuation of Norwegian folk elements mixed with some doom, with all instruments once again performed by Fenriz himself, as well as the now-trademark vocal delivery. The latter part of the album also features a couple of black metal tracks which explore territory a bit more in line with Darkthrone, particularly the track ‘Total Death’. Høstmørke is also notable for featuring a couple of small guest appearances from Aldrahn (Thorns, ex Dødheimsgard) and Vicotnik of Dødheimsgard.

  • Sigh (JPN) – Scorn Defeat WHITE LP 34.88

    Black Metal

‘Scorn Defeat’ was originally released in 1993 after the band had signed to Mayhem guitarist Euronymous’ emerging Deathlike Silence Productions, with the album eventually surfacing following his death (& also dedicated in his honour). With a deep appreciation for the black metal masters of the 80’s such as Celtic Frost & Venom, Sigh would also masterfully weave intricate keyboard textures & skilled piano composition courtesy of Mirai Kawashima among the Frostfuelled riffing to create an atmospherically distinctive & dark sound. The lyrical content was also unusual for the time, incorporating strong elements of occultism & eastern mysticism to differentiate them somewhat from their Scandinavian peers.
