One could argue that French black metal has been dead forever: ravens pick at the corpses of the Black Legions still, those dried-up sinews not fit for consumption no matter how many generations removed, and urban decay has covered much of the prevailing paradigm for nearly two decades, incorrectly assumed to be a uniting (and uniquely) French expression. One would be right, too. AUTARCIE return at the right time, not so much shouldering this burden as carrying a spiritual weight that’s solely concerned with naturalism and its myriad portrayals thereof. Romantic is this path, in the purest definition of the word, and Apogée.Ivresse.Agonie is the brilliant canvas.

One of the most imposing and revered bands in black metal’s underground for the past decade, BEKËTH NEXËHMÜ have built a literally towering body of work. The band is yet another creative vehicle of Ancient Records linchpin Swartadauþuz (Azelisassath, Digerdöden, Gnipahålan, Musmahhu, Mystik, Summum, Trolldom, Daudadagr, as well as current labelmates GREVE and MUVITIUM), but it’s largely BEKËTH NEXËHMÜ where the man has most built his legacy. Only two official albums have been released – 2011’s de dunkla herrarna and 2019’s De fördolda klangorna – but it’s the band’s myriad demos, each one arguably greater and grander than most band’s actual albums, that have equally put a frightening new(er) face on Swedish black metal, by turns becoming the nowadays face of the form.

Two spearheads of their respective scene forge an unholy alliance over this German/Québécois collaboration who will certainly be making waves. Faithful to their respective style, the two outfits launch themselves into blasphemous tirades, Délétère opening hostilities with 3 odes to chaos and pestilence, followed by 4 occult and satanic hymns from Sarkrista. Both bands are on top of their game on this recording, which is complimented by an excellent production as well as a mastering courtesy of Tehom Productions, so that the whole is more coherent.
