Felvum’s take on Black Metal is quite a simple one, a straight forward approach that sounds not too much unlike Darkthrone at their classic ‘Transylvanian Hunger’ album… It does have a stronger sense of melodicism though, making a comparison to Taake on their, equally fantastic debut album, ‘Nattestid Ser Porten Vid’ also very much in place. The overall sound of this EP, which clocks just under the 15 minute mark, is really authentic as well, making this a very exciting listen. No, not at all original, but on this particular example, when it is done right, it is done right. And that is exactly what ‘Fullmoon Mysticism’ is, a near-perfect example of excellent Nordic Black Metal.

“Valaquenta I” has been Frostgard’s first release, and it tells through ancient melodies, the story of the Valar and Valier Manwë, Varda, Aulë, Yavanna, Nienna, Mandos, Vairë and the dark lord Melkor.

Valaquenta II is the second part of the Valaquenta ritual, the music that guides the story of the Valar according to the Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien. In Frostgard’s second release, the stories and thoughts of the Valar are told through dark and ancient melodies of Dungeon Synth music.

Black Metal

Grimdor is a black metal/dungeon synth project based on the stories of Tolkien. You won’t find clear and complex songs here, the band focuses much more on LoFi quality and catchy song structures like the early second wave of black metal. The simplicity of the early 90s, primitively produced songs/rehearsals that in no way reinvent the wheel – these are raw, arcane and ancients sounds. Different places and stories are thematically treated,misantrophy and call of the mountain and the woods.

Formed in 2010 and hailing from Quebec, OUBLIETH’s ‘Mornelance’ is their debut cassette for Out of Season and limited to 200 copies. “Falling somewhere in-between what some would call dungeon synth and the much more cinematographic scopes of artists like Tangerine Dream, Vangelis and Klaus Schulz, Oublieth draws its inspiration in classic 70’s and 80’s fantasy themes, as evidenced by a recording done entirely with analog synthesisers as well as the stunning cover by renowned Dungeons and Dragons / Ravenloft artist Stephen Fabian (with permission).”

This EP was composed a few months after “Taur Nu Fuin” and is comprised of two long songs on side A, plus two additional bonus tracks on side B which were originally released as part of the digital only compilation “V/A Tolkien Inspired Music” by Olog Productions, also in early 2016 and which soon faded into obscurity. Highest recommendation!
