Some question why IN TWILIGHT’S EMBRACE is now being released by Terratur Possessions, and although we owe no one anything, I’ll briefly explain.
After spending weeks on tour with these guys getting to know them first hand, seeing how hard working they are, I’ll rather work with passionate, real artists who works from an honest and devoted place, rather than partaking in the charade of brotherhoods, militias and idolizations that plagues the Black Metal genre today. Where everyone’s in each others echo chambers, praising what’s at best mediocre, thus weakening all that we stand for. Without criticism one gets nowhere, surround yourself with yes-men and your downfall will follow.
Although starting off as a Hardcore band exactly 20 years ago, both the band and members evolved into something more sinister. I mean, who doesn’t change over a 20 year period…? They started perfecting their craft around 14 years after their formation, through a magnificent album called VANITAS. This is for me where the band shone through as a legit Black Metal band and raised the bar significantly. This did not get unnoticed and they toured the land relentlessly with bands like IMMOLATION, AZARATH and BLAZE OF PERDITION.
A year later we saw the follow up LAWA blow up like Iceland and the band got recognition inside and outside of Poland, and the chatter began; where the hell did these guys come from? More giggling and touring followed alongside MGLA, BEHEMTOH and WHOREDOM RIFE, to mention a few.

After 2019’s well-received Endless Trails demo via SIGNAL REX, HOLLOW WOODS strike with a full-length debut fittingly titled Cold Winds Cleave the Earth. While hailing from Finland, this mysterious entity largely eschew their homeland’s reigning black metal idiom, instead taking influence from Ukraine (Roman Saenko’s projects), Norway (early Ulver, equally early Gorgoroth), and especially Russia (the Blazebirth Hall collective). In other words, pure & proud BLACK METAL, nevertheless done with personality and charisma.

Building upon that grand fortress is a four-song/22-minute mini-album likewise truly titled: The Oath of the Black Wolf. Here, ORGREL have gone a-hunting, their ’90s black metal classicism stalking and striking with a hunger only hinted at previously. Still, fueled by this fire they may be, the Italians across this mini manage to maximize their epic side, with the predecessor’s flat-yet-full soundfield now becoming slightly more chromatic in the process. Lead lines portend dark truths, ever building in tension and then grandeur, but the record’s swift-yet-satisfying runtime reveals the darkest, most intrinsic truth: black metal doesn’t need to “become” anything when it already IS. Hail The Oath of the Black Wolf!

One of the most accomplished newcomers Signal Rex has come across in recent years, the shadowy entity of Valais burst from the voidal womb fully formed in the middle of 2021 with their self-titled debut album. Despite existing in the vast (and vastly inconsistent) wilderness of Bandcamp, Valais in fact imparted a power and poignancy that takes most bands at least a couple records to reach, if at all. Both classically composed and forward-thinking, Valais understood right from the start the core tenets of true black metal, but equally understood how to inject their own personality and poise into such to create something that adds to the language of BLACK METAL rather than mimics its speech patterns (and sloppily so).
No, Valais as a work is a towering monument of tension and release, skillful contours and subtle dynamics, richly malevolent melody and slipstreaming violence. Aesthetic touchstones include the likes of Slidhr, latter-day Leviathan, and even Blut Aus Nord at their wiliest, but Valais also exhibit an understated sense of the pagan – perhaps stemming from their native Ireland, or perhaps from some strange cosmos far beyond our comprehension… Either way, all of this coalesces into a whilrlwinding five-song/37-minute experience that feels far vaster than that succinct runtime otherwise suggests. As such, Signal Rex is honored to rightfully release this tome in all physical formats.
