Now on his fourth album under the moniker, DUGHPA is another creative guise of prolific madman Wagner Ödegård, renown among freaks and underground dwellers for WULKANAZ and his selfsame solo work as well as TOMHET, MAUVET MAUVE, and FELON WIND among others. While half of Wagner’s expressions belong to black metal and the other half to ambient, there’s varying degrees with the latter to which he casts his ever-restless gaze. Among them, DUGPHA is undeniably the most cosmic – or kosmische, the hypnotic synth-based variant of krautrock as per classic Tangerine Dream, Cluster, and Harmonia or the early solo works of Klaus Schulze, Roedelius, and Vangelis.

RUTTOKOSMOS are one of the great “what if?”s of Finnish black metal. The band formed sometime in 2003 and released the five-song Ja minä näin kuoleman demo in 2006 and then the six-song Kärsimys demo a year later. Afterward, nothing was heard from RUTTOKOSMOS ever again. Only one member concurrently played in Divina Inferis, and the other two members either disappeared and played pseudonymously in other bands.

Lead lines portend dark truths, ever building in tension and then grandeur, but the record’s swift-yet-satisfying runtime reveals the darkest, most intrinsic truth: black metal doesn’t need to “become” anything when it already IS. Characteristically coated in miles of miasmic rawness that’s an instrument unto itself, the lyrics of Esoteric Atavism delve into the OLD – old energies, old spiritually – and the music follows suit by reconstituting elements from elder BLACK CILICE recordings. Always in the red but now deeper into the black, that’s not to say Esoteric Atavism is a deliberate throwback or crass “return to the roots”; rather, the band’s birth pangs are given a deeper wisdom and wider-screened hysteria for the listener to drown himself in…or avoid, revoltingly stratifying as BLACK CILICE’s black metal may be. More pointedly, riffs are more forthright, with experimentation subtler, and songs in kind shorter: the proverbial ouroboros, then, forever feeding on the past.
