Often regarded as the first Beherit album, “The Oath of Black Blood” is a compilation of Beherit’s “Demonomancy” demo and the “Dawn of Satan’s Millennium” EP, both of which were originally released in 1990. Beherit never intended for these recordings to be released as a compilation LP; a dispute with their label, Turbo Music, resulted in the label’s unilateral decision to compile the earlier recordings rather than wait for a proper album of new material, as Beherit intended. Nevertheless, for many people, “The Oath of Black Blood” was their introduction to Beherit, causing many to assume it was recorded as a proper album. Both “Demonomancy” and “Dawn of Satan’s Millennium” represent inflection points in Beherit’s evolution.

Like Beherit’s other pre-DDTM recordings, “At the Devil’s Studio” is a visceral explosion of bestial carnage. In fact, most of the tracks here are re-recorded versions of songs from the “Demonomancy” demo or else earlier renderings of tracks that appeared on the “Down There…” demo released in 1991 under the name The Lord Diabolus. There are three songs (“At the Devil’s Churns,” “Whores of Belial,” and the instrumental rehearsal track that opens the album) that don’t appear elsewhere in the Beherit catalog.

German black metal act formed in 1999 by multi-instrumentalists Machosias and B.S.oD. Machosias performed bass, drums and guitars on the album, enlisting help from fellow OLD PAGAN member Panzer Nidhogg for vocals and NELANDHIR member Freydagson for keyboards. The album is rooted somewhere between raw black metal and atmospheric black metal. The guitar riffs are enjoyable, with flowing tremolo riffing leading, creating a fuzzy wall of sound in the background that merges with the flourishes of atmospheric keyboard notes while the drumming sticks with fast paced double-bass runs and double-kick patterns, with a solid undercarriage of tremolo riffing and frenetic percussion. True black metal for true black metal fanatics.

Always in the red but now deeper into the black, that’s not to say Esoteric Atavism is a deliberate throwback or crass “return to the roots”; rather, the band’s birth pangs are given a deeper wisdom and wider-screened hysteria for the listener to drown himself in…or avoid, revoltingly stratifying as BLACK CILICE’s black metal may be. More pointedly, riffs are more forthright, with experimentation subtler, and songs in kind shorter: the proverbial ouroboros, then, forever feeding on the past.
