  • Funeral Harvest (NOR) – Redemptio CD 14.88

    Black Metal

A pan-international quartet featuring members from Norway and Italy, FUNERAL HARVEST formed in 2016 and unleashed their first public recording the very next year. Tellingly titled Bunker Ritual Rehearsal, this first strike was auspicious to say the very least, and quickly built a name for FUNERAL HARVEST in the underground. Their raw ‘n’ robust black metal sound was rooted in the ancient ways but never regressive – in fact, its ghoulish hostility was perversely refreshing. An epic digital single followed in 2019, but it was 2020’s self-titled EP, released to widespread acclaim by SIGNAL REX, where FUNERAL HARVEST indeed began to reap: a grim ‘n’ graven culmination of all that’s come before and all that lies ahead.

  • Geist Of Ouachita (USA) – Imprisoned In The Graven Wood CD 14.88

    Black Metal

One of the best new developments in American black metal, Geist of Ouachita is the work of one Roanake, who numbers nearly a dozen other projects the past three years, some of them even cross-continental. With Geist of Ouachita, the focus is on unremittingly grim yet alluringly melodic BLACK METAL: black metal from the ancient dungeons of the ’90s, and also black metal from the raw renaissance of the past decade – the latter, largely under the auspices of Signal Rex, who’ve made household names of Portugal’s most intimidating cults.

  • Geistaz’ika (DNK) – Trolddomssejd I Skovens Dybe Kedel GOLD LP 28.88

    Black Metal

GEISTAZ’ IKA are a shadowy entity hailing from Denmark’s revitalized (and rising) black metal underground. The band revealed their first public recording, Trolddomsejd i skovens dybe kedel, at the very end of 2018, but only digitally. So impressed by its windswept wonder, SIGNAL REX eagerly stepped forward to release this debut album unto the worldwide stage.

Indeed, Trolddomsejd i skovens dybe kedel is a work of windswept wonder, and infinitely more. It’s a work of black metal’s most ancient and enduring elements, but rearranged in such a startling(ly confident) manner that they altogether feel surprisingly fresh. Resolutely raw but rippingly clear in execution, GEISTAZ’ IKA create classic Nordic black metal with a distinctly melodic air – and one most especially melancholic or at least solemn, even during the album’s most blastingly intense moments – with guitars and also bass weaving misty, mystical tales that feel a lot like its cover art looks. References can be detected of both the Norwegian Perished and Hades but also early Isvind, Helheim, and Ulver, such is GEISTAZ’ IKA’s incorporation of delicate acoustics.

  • Ginnungagap (POR) – Heliacal Arising CD 15.88

    Black Metal

No strangers to the ever-fertile Portuguese black metal underground, GINNUNGAGAP preceded the esteemed likes of TRONO ALÉM MORTE, ORDEM SATANICA, and VOËMMR. To date, they’ve delivered two extremely limited tapes, but now are even more embraced by the cold and frosty winds of the Aldebaran Star. Witness Heliacal Arising. What is set to be a new landmark not only for the Circle but for the wider Portuguese underground, GINNUNGAGAP here conjure a bewitching storm of strangely soothing mysticism. Shadows and secrets still remain, but Helical Arising moves with etheric might – “raw” on a very basic or simplified level, but embellished with a rare refinement that makes their musings simply otherworldly. Is there synth in there, or some unorthodox twist of strings? Is it recorded live in the rehearsal room, or painstakingly layered with an auteur’s touch? Only GINNUNGAGAP know, but thankfully, the faithful reap the rewards: Heliacal Arising is transportive black metal par excellence, an effortless throwback to ancient-days atmosphere.

  • Grigorien (DNK) – Magtens Evangelium LP 26.88

    Black Metal

Named after the promethean angels that sinned against God in the Apocrypha, GRIGORIEN was originally conceived in 2006 by Spedalsk and Benedictus as a tool for uncompromising hate propaganda and a call to violence against religion and in particular the Abrahamitic three. Starting in 2007, a demo was released every three years, and then, in 2015, came a split with Danish comrades Ligfaerd. Thereafter, silence…until now.

At long last, GRIGORIEN are set to release their full-length debut, Magtens Evangelium. With a lineup that presently includes vocals by Spedalsk (who also lends his voice to Witchcult), guitars and bass by Benedictus (who also plays bass in Witchcult and Ligfaerd), and drums by Geistaz (who has the solo project GEISTAZ’IKA), GRIGORIEN hereby encompass past, present, and future with their vintage black metal ultraviolence.

  • Grymmstalt (CHI) – Anthems Of Mournful Despondency CD 14.88

    Black Metal

GRYMMSTALT is a new cross-continental project between two of black metal’s busiest men: Wampyric Strigoi (WAMPYRIC RITES, DUNGEON STEEL, AURAE LUNAE et. al.) and Lord Valtgryftåke (RÜNDGARD, Pyreficativm, Gryftigæn, 13th Temple, Mánþiel et. al.). While both also helm WINTERSTORM, GRYMMSTALT foregoes that band’s more medieval ruminations toward the trance-inducing melancholy of Burzum circa Filosofem – or perhaps more concretely, grim disciples like early Forgotten Woods, I Shalt Become, and Wigrid. Their first recording under this banner, Athems of Mournful Despondency is accurately titled: five time-expanding/halting tracks across 45 haunting minutes, shimmering with a strangely full rawness that only heightens (or deepens) the despairing abyss you’ll be inexorably drawn toward.

  • Hail Conjurer & Absolute Key (FIN) – Trident and Vision LP 26.88

    Black Metal.

Totaling five tracks in 30 minutes, Trident and Vision is structured in a unique way. Of those five tracks, both HAIL CONJURER and ABSOLUTE KEY have their own respective track; then, the other three tracks are completely collaborative works between both bands. Just as uniquely, the tracklisting alternates these collaborative and solo tracks, making the flow of the record fever-dreaming, unpredictable, and above all, unsettling. While both HAIL CONJURER and ABSOLUTE KEY already skirt the hinterlands of “abstract,” the totality of this record – both solo and collaborative – is further abstracted, stretching to a dangerous limit the already-broad stylistic repertoire of both bands, altogether imparting a worn-out feeling that irrevocably underlines that their creators are far from steady & clear-headed people. Reflective of this shared-yet-still-divergent vision, both bands at the upcoming gig will perform together, creating blackened soundscapes partly planned and partly based on instinct. No light…no hope.

    Black Metal

After 2019’s well-received Endless Trails demo via SIGNAL REX, HOLLOW WOODS strike with a full-length debut fittingly titled Cold Winds Cleave the Earth. While hailing from Finland, this mysterious entity largely eschew their homeland’s reigning black metal idiom, instead taking influence from Ukraine (Roman Saenko’s projects), Norway (early Ulver, equally early Gorgoroth), and especially Russia (the Blazebirth Hall collective). In other words, pure & proud BLACK METAL, nevertheless done with personality and charisma.

    Black Metal

By now, IRAE should require little introduction. Since the dawn of this cursed millennium, mainman Vulturius has prolifically pursued a singular vision of RAW BLACK METAL that includes five full-lengths and countless split releases with likeminded comrades. As such, IRAE have almost singlehandedly invigorated Portugal’s black metal scene, particularly the rawer iteration of it. And since the band’s blood pact with SIGNAL REX deepened in 2020 with the release of the landmark Lurking in the Depths LP last summer and followed the next year with the EPs Korona Winter Rehearsal of Darkness & Evil and Dangerovs Magick Zpells from the Mesziah of Death and a split LP with comrades ORDEM SATÂNICA and WØMB most recently, there’s no sign of IRAE’s black flame being extinguished anytime soon.
