Skrewdriver (UK) – White Rider LP

RAC/Oi!

Ian Stuart was imprisoned in 1986 for defending himself and his comrades against an attack by black people. He spent his year in prison writing new songs for Skrewdriver and articles for fanzines. “White Rider” was released towards the end of 1987 and consisted mainly of songs he had written during his imprisonment. The album is now considered Skrewdriver’s best work in terms of lyrics, sound, and musical performance. But first, after Ian’s release from prison, Skrewdriver went to Mark Sutherland’s studio with Martin Cross (guitar), Merv Shields (bass), John Burnley (drums), and, of course, Ian Stuart (vocals) to record the “White Rider” LP. However, the band was anything but satisfied with the result and decided to re-record the entire album from scratch, which they did a few weeks later. It was a good decision: six weeks after its release, 5,000 copies had already been sold.
