Beyond Man is a band lain dormant for a decade, having risen from the ashes of what was once known as Vordrinn. After numerous line-up changes and unreleased demos behind us, we have taken form to give old and new material a worthy treatment and release.

German black metal act formed in 1999 by multi-instrumentalists Machosias and B.S.oD. Machosias performed bass, drums and guitars on the album, enlisting help from fellow OLD PAGAN member Panzer Nidhogg for vocals and NELANDHIR member Freydagson for keyboards. The album is rooted somewhere between raw black metal and atmospheric black metal. The guitar riffs are enjoyable, with flowing tremolo riffing leading, creating a fuzzy wall of sound in the background that merges with the flourishes of atmospheric keyboard notes while the drumming sticks with fast paced double-bass runs and double-kick patterns, with a solid undercarriage of tremolo riffing and frenetic percussion. True black metal for true black metal fanatics.

And so it goes with the band’s sixth full-length, Esoteric Atavism. Ever aptly titled, Esoteric Atavism’s contents embody that title in a most provocative manner. While BLACK CILICE is esoteric in the extreme, more so is the entity atavistic, and indeed are those energies the cornerstone of this record. Characteristically coated in miles of miasmic rawness that’s an instrument unto itself, the lyrics of Esoteric Atavism delve into the OLD – old energies, old spiritually – and the music follows suit by reconstituting elements from elder BLACK CILICE recordings. Always in the red but now deeper into the black, that’s not to say Esoteric Atavism is a deliberate throwback or crass “return to the roots”; rather, the band’s birth pangs are given a deeper wisdom and wider-screened hysteria for the listener to drown himself in…or avoid, revoltingly stratifying as BLACK CILICE’s black metal may be. More pointedly, riffs are more forthright, with experimentation subtler, and songs in kind shorter: the proverbial ouroboros, then, forever feeding on the past.

After many demo recordings, Black Door unleashed its first fulllength output, consisting of five intense hymns in devotion to Older Gods. Chaotic riffs, screams in reverence, and wailing chants form the harbinger of an elder spirit’s coming. One which is not welcoming.

From the forbidden depths of vampiric sorcery emerges Black Funeral’s most haunting conjuration, “Empire of Blood” – a spectral tapestry woven from the arcane mysteries of the undead nobility. This otherworldly opus channels the ancient magicks that flow through immortal veins, where centuries-old rituals bind the living to eternal darkness. Black Funeral is one of the originators of “Vampyric Black Metal” from the early to mid 1990’s! Each track unfolds like an incantation from blood-stained grimoires, driven by haunting tremolo melodies that spiral through the shadows like phantoms in midnight procession. The album’s ethereal atmosphere conjures visions of pale aristocrats performing forbidden rites in candlelit chambers, their empire sustained not by conquest but by the dark arts that transcend mortal understanding.

From the frost-shrouded crypts of eternity emerges Black Funeral’s unholy testament, “Vampyr Throne of the Beast” – a glacial monument to the undead sovereigns who rule from shadows beyond mortal comprehension. This arcane opus channels the primordial darkness of castle keeps and moonless nights, where ancient bloodlines converge in blasphemous ritual. Released originally in 1995, “Vampyr…” is the debut album that established Black Funeral as one of the foundational bands in the American black metal scene.
Each track unfolds like parchment scrolls inscribed with forbidden knowledge, weaving tremolo-picked melodies that slice through the veil between worlds. The album’s frigid atmosphere conjures images of candlelit chambers where vampiric nobility hold court, their pale forms draped in medieval splendor as they preside over kingdoms of bone and shadow.
Raw, hypnotic passages cascade like winter winds through gothic spires, while ritualistic percussion echoes from stone halls where no mortal foot has tread for centuries. The production’s deliberate coldness preserves the necromantic essence – each note crystallized in ice, each vocal incantation rising from depths where daylight dare not venture.
“Vampyr Throne of the Beast” stands as a grimoire of black metal orthodoxy, summoning the spectral majesty of Europe’s darkest medieval legends. This is music for the witching hour, when the boundary between the living and the eternally damned grows thin, and ancient powers stir in their unhallowed thrones.

Comprising four tracks in an epic 40 minutes, Return of Primordial Stillness indeed sounds primordial and indeed invokes a crypt-like stillness, but there’s so much more going on here.
