Hart & Heftig (DEU) – Hoyerswerda LP €26.88
RAC/Oi!
Uncompromising German rock production from the band from the Saxon town of Hoyerswerda. Life-affirming texts with identification potential to the power of 10 plus professional music that sticks in your ear canal. The disc was first released on CD in 1999 and marked the second album by the musicians who previously made the instruments sound in Bollwerk. The boys have mastered their musical craft and therefore clearly do not fall under the label “rumpel rock”, but rather deliver solid melodies and snappy guitar solos.

Since before its birth the vile rot that is Harvest, was given its death sentence.

Havohej (USA) – Table Of Uncreation BLUE LP €24.88
Black Metal
There has never been another artist quite like HAVOHEJ. Perhaps Beherit, but whereas that band’s Holocausto Vengeance reveled in primitivism and eventually flipped the script with little to no warning, sole HAVOHEJ visionary Paul Ledney has studiously pursued the outer limits of BEYOND-black metal, patiently utilizing primitivism as a foundation to explore esoteric vibrations ‘n’ undercurrents only the most tweaked of ears are in tune to. Of course, the name Paul Ledney should be well known in the underground from his preceding Profanatica, but HAVOHEJ is the man’s vision alone, and it is a vision that’s massive and miasmic to behold.

Heraldic Blaze (NOR) – Blazoned Heraldry LP €28.88
Black Metal
Witness their debut demo, Blazoned Heraldry. The duo of American multi-instrumentalist Argent Pale (vocals, bass, flute) and Norwegian guitarist Peregrinus (HJEMSØKT, SOLUS GRIEF, KVAD, UNHOLY CRAFT) create a spellbinding tapestry of rustic tones and textures. In fact, on texture alone – kinda clean and clanging, yet with more than a hint of ghostly grit and almost surfy reverb – HERALDIC BLAZE stand out, but it’s how they utilize those textures in the service of songwriting: winding and wild, frothing up to an almost-dangerous delirium, but more often than not leaving wide-open spaces to let their medieval melodicism bend and sway with bravado and bittersweetness. And as actual flute flutters in from time to time, the sum effect, more often than not, is ALIEN – unsettling and alluring in equal measure.

Herbstlethargie (DEU) – Melancholie im Blattfall BROWN DLP €36.88
Black Metal
The German Atmospheric/Depressive Black Metal solo-project Herbstlethargie was founded by multi instrumentalist Herbst (also: Gernotshagen, on drums, bass, additional lead guitars, duduk and vocals) to express his very own musical ideas and creativity. The first lyrics date back more than 10 years.
When by 2015 all conceptual ideas and further lyrics had been finished, the band name was chosen and older lyrics revised to fit the final concept of expressing the different phases of autumn from the early cool nights of September, throughout the colder days and weeks, to the harbingers of early winter and the first snow.

Hinthial (ITA) – :Rasna: 10″MLP €18.88
Black Metal
In the womb of one of the secrets of time lies an inalienable resonance between the roots of man and his history cognizance. Oftenly, the seeking of an endless spirit endowment engulfs him with a veil of barren knowledge, that commonly ties his thoughts and reflections to the boundaries of an ordinary living, dragged by a flux of invisible strands that may craft a path leading nowhere. Sometimes, this delivers into a self-inducted catharsis where the glorious pursuit of ancient trails in own’s blood turns imperative. Despite it being minimum or gigantic. Pure as a child’s heart or intertwined as a chimera. This seed is what made man within and not without. Empowering him to step above all his previous versions yet giving birth to what will become his spiritform.

Hollow Woods (FIN) – Cold Winds Cleave the Earth LP €23.88
Black Metal
After 2019’s well-received Endless Trails demo via SIGNAL REX, HOLLOW WOODS strike with a full-length debut fittingly titled Cold Winds Cleave the Earth. While hailing from Finland, this mysterious entity largely eschew their homeland’s reigning black metal idiom, instead taking influence from Ukraine (Roman Saenko’s projects), Norway (early Ulver, equally early Gorgoroth), and especially Russia (the Blazebirth Hall collective). In other words, pure & proud BLACK METAL, nevertheless done with personality and charisma.

House Of Atreus (USA) – Orations LP €26.88
Black Metal
Since their emergence in 2011, HOUSE OF ATREUS have become one of the most singular hordes to hail from North American soil during that time. Across a demo, an EP, and two successive full-lengths, the Minnesota natives have patiently and painstakingly crafted death metal of a most epic order. A veritable riff-machine, HOUSE OF ATREUS are powered by the Greek tragedies and have that very same tragedy (as well as triumph) coursing through their rough ‘n’ rugged veins. Theirs is a sound unapologetically influenced by the ancient Hellenic legends Varathron and Rotting Christ as well as other singular riff-machines like Grand Belial’s Key and Arghoslent, and the earliest and most blackened works of Running Wild. However, HOUSE OF ATREUS handily transcend these influences, as evidenced by their critically acclaimed second album, From the Madness of Ixion, released in 2018 by IRON BONEHEAD. Truly, the quartet managed to add to this glorious lineage rather than merely bottom-feed off it.

Hulder (USA) – Godslastering Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry LP €26.88
Black Metal
Just like debut albums properly should, Godslastering Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry straddles both HULDER’s past as well as unearthing new paths. Within the eight songs comprising the 40-minute record, Hulder spans myriad generations and idioms of black metal, but all deeply rooted in ’90s classicism: from the paganisms of earliest Enslaved, Ulver, Isvind, and Kampfar to the hypnotizing grit of classic Judas Iscariot and Grand Belial’s Key, on to the mystical majesty of unsung Greeks like Zemial and Kawir and even over to the woodland wonder of old Opera IX. Which is all to say that HULDER here not so much mimic their forebears so much as meld the idiosyncrasies inherent to each into a masterclass in all-caps BLACK METAL songwriting: dynamic, engaging, nuanced, and transportive, but undeniably physical in its pulsing vistas of darkness and mystery. Likewise, Godslastering Hymns of a Forlorn Peasantry is structured like a true album, with Side 1 kicking in an utterly feral manner and cresting along to vicious wanderlust and ending on the eerily restrained near-ambient hymn “De Dijle,” and then Side 2 furthering the synth mysticism and maintaining a more triumphant aspect, with the closing magickal march of “From Whence an Ancient Evil Once Reigned” sounding not unlike a lost relic from Grieghallen circa 1994. And all this is encased in a production that’s rich, robust, and rounded; only the rawness of the performances bleed into the soundfield, a clear division from HULDER’s earlier demo days.
