Released by WEREWOLF, the band’s second album fulfilled the promise of 2019’s not-inconsiderable Burning Banners of the Funereal War with superlative flair. The sound was stridently classicist, but suffused with windswept grandeur, martial surge, and orkish execution – and, perhaps above all, both songwriting and personality to spare. No longer “the other project of the OLD SORCERY guy,” WARMOON LORD mainman Lord Vrajitor made sure Battlespells lived up to its namesake, and then some.

Originally released in a limited edition in early 2020, this split album features exclusive tracks from two uprising hordes among Finland’s ever-fertile black metal underground, and both being bands who’ve since released crimes via WEREWOLF. WARMOON LORD should require no introduction after 2021’s superlative Battlespells, and here does Lord Vrajitor expand upon his classicist muse: medieval black metal majesty from the mid/late ’90s, with special emphasis on spectral synths for this recording. For their part, VULTYRIUM might’ve released one of 2022’s dark-horse hits with their self-titled album, but it was here where mainman The Vultyrian established his crude-yet-cruising style of black metal rife buttressed by somber bass work, at times evoking early Algaion. Together, seven spells cast in 38 minutes: Pure Cold Impurity raises the banners – again – of modern Finlandia resistance!

Two of Finland’s black metal hordes unite to compile and recite “Dead Christ Prayer,” an eight-track split release that represents both the country’s unique tradition and its future. Witchcraft, whose style pays reverence in no subtle way to the great Beherit, returns to expand its imprint and demonstrate its continued adherence to the unrefined bestiality that its primary inspiration pioneered thirty years ago. Its co-conspirators in Aske first inhabited the same time and space as Beherit, but then began an eighteen-year hiatus in 1998, returning in 2016 to embark on a second blasphemous stint of new recordings, which have culminated in this effort. “Dead Christ Prayer” thus presides over the exsanguination of the lifeless body of the false savior and the ensuing transfusion ritual, combining the old blood of Aske with the new blood of Witchcraft to perpetuate the cycle of evil.
