  • Seance Of (AUS) – The Colour of Magick LP 23.88

    Black Metal

A ritual in the key of evil, sole member AR pays homage to black metal in all its glory with his own morbid metal style.

Dual-guitar madness paired with subtle and strange synths, bombastic bass, and demonic drums enchant your ears as Satanic screams curse you for the duration of this spell.

  • Spectral Corruption (SK) – Requiem LP 26.88

    Black Metal

Now, to round out the ruinous year of 2022, it is here, bearing the title Requiem. Indeed something of a lament, feeling fixed and finite, SPECTRAL CORRUPTION’s latest full-length bristles with a despair that can only suggest infinite misery, malodorous and miasmic: a vacuum of violence where melodic/majestic riffing gets broken down and blown out. Mainman Verminitar (also of Cryptic Vampire and Spheral Void) howls into that vacuum, drunk on his own power/misery but drowning within it all the same. That he ends the album with a Lamp of Murmuur cover indeed underlines SPECTRAL CORRUPTION’s place within this uprising of modern RAW black metal.

  • Teufelsberg (POL) – Pakt mit dem Teufel CD 15.88

    Black Metal

TEUFELSBERG return their second full-length strike, Pakt mit dem Teufel. As cold and grim as ever, the band here spelunk among corridors rich in the treasures of pre-internet black metal, integrating not only their ancient Polish idiom but also contemporaneous Nordic and Hellenic ones. In a sense, there’s a sense of deja vu…initially, as the deeper one dives among TEUFELBERG’s treasures, the more those jewels shimmer in a manner uniquely the band’s own. As ever, the horde’s raw-yet-clear tones and attendant execution are superlative for their defiance against prevailing trends, and the full might of their mysticism is surely felt every second of this six-song/38-minute album.

  • Teufelsberg (POL) – Ordre Du Diable LP 26.88

    Black Metal

Hailing from Poland and making their public debut with the demo Ancient Darkness Triumphant in 2020, TEUFELSBERG are a band out of time. The modern “black metal underground” is a vacant void to be shunned, spit upon; for the trio, the elder ways of black metal militancy reflected in the Polish underground during the glorious ’90s are to be proudly upheld. And upheld they did with a successive split with comrades MINNESJORD last year, once again through the auspices of SIGNAL REX, in the process building their own dead Christ commune.

  • Trono Além Morte (POR) / Vetala (POR) – Split LP 26.88

    Black Metal

This split features two of the harshest and most haunting Portuguese black metal hordes. Starting off are TRONO ALEM MORTE, who offer two exclusive tracks which breathe a desolate ‘n’ desperate fury, irascible and irrational, like an endless howling into the void; these tracks preclude their forthcoming debut album in December, to be released at Invicta Requiem Mass III. On the flipside are VETALA, one of the most prolific bands in the nowadays raw Portuguese scene. Their lengthy, 13-minute contribution here continues that hysteric spree of misery, exploring all corners of their boundless dungeon in an almost improvisatory delirium; their Demo IV is forthcoming, so beware.

  • Valais (IRE) – Valais LP 25.88

    Black Metal

One of the most accomplished newcomers Signal Rex has come across in recent years, the shadowy entity of Valais burst from the voidal womb fully formed in the middle of 2021 with their self-titled debut album. Despite existing in the vast (and vastly inconsistent) wilderness of Bandcamp, Valais in fact imparted a power and poignancy that takes most bands at least a couple records to reach, if at all. Both classically composed and forward-thinking, Valais understood right from the start the core tenets of true black metal, but equally understood how to inject their own personality and poise into such to create something that adds to the language of BLACK METAL rather than mimics its speech patterns (and sloppily so).

No, Valais as a work is a towering monument of tension and release, skillful contours and subtle dynamics, richly malevolent melody and slipstreaming violence. Aesthetic touchstones include the likes of Slidhr, latter-day Leviathan, and even Blut Aus Nord at their wiliest, but Valais also exhibit an understated sense of the pagan – perhaps stemming from their native Ireland, or perhaps from some strange cosmos far beyond our comprehension… Either way, all of this coalesces into a whilrlwinding five-song/37-minute experience that feels far vaster than that succinct runtime otherwise suggests. As such, Signal Rex is honored to rightfully release this tome in all physical formats.

  • Vermisst (POL) ‎– Zmierzch Stalowej Ciemności LP 25.88

Released at the dawn of 2020 on CD format, Zmierzch Stalowej Ciemności was VERMISST’s first, fuller-length strike since their formation in 2018. Despite being a relatively new entity, the band’s sound is undoubtedly OLD, hailing the old gods of their Polish homeland’s rich black metal heritage. Cryogenically cold, unremittingly grim, shrouded in a mysticism rich in ancient splendor, VERMISST are thoroughly mid ’90s Polish black metal for a modern world too long neglectful of the Old Ways. Pure and proud, Zmierzch Stalowej Ciemności is poignant proof that classicism endures no matter the decade, and that ever-so-subtle twists on tradition can result in resoundingly “new” manifestations worthy of that noble lineage.

Now, courtesy of fans-from-the-beginning SIGNAL REX, VERMISST’s Zmierzch Stalowej Ciemności is being released on vinyl format for the first time ever, with three exclusive (and righteously raw) tracks expanding the release to 40 minutes in length.

  • Vetala (POR) – Retarded Necro Demential Hole CD 14.88

    Black Metal

If the raw Portuguese black metal scene has (rightfully) reaped renown or at least reverential infamy, then VETALA’s third full-length strike shall be the sonic vomit to ruin everyone’s day. For over a decade now, exploring the most depraved and transgressive corners of what BLACK METAL can be has marked this duo as nigh-on untouchable. Unrepentantly noisy, accidentally avant-garde, furiously FUCK OFF: although continuing the dark, disgusting work laid down by Black Circle forerunners Irae and Mons Veneris, VETALA have become an idiom unto themselves. And now, with the aptly titled Retarded Necro Demential Hole do the duo abase themselves and bow down before the all-consuming powers of ritual retardation; these four, nameless songs have no reason to exist, if only to rain feces on good taste and any and all conceptions of “black metal.” In fact, it’s so beyond primitive and artlessly improvisational, so nightmarishly unhinged, one could qualify it as PRE-black metal.

  • Vetala (POR) – Satanic Morbid Metal CD 14.88

    Black Metal

Originally released back in 2010, when the raw Portuguese black metal scene was a heavily guarded secret only discovered by the most depraved, Satanic Morbid Metal indeed accomplished its title and then some: although continuing the dark, disgusting work laid down by Black Circle forerunners Irae and Mons Veneris, VETALA here brazenly unveiled an exquisitely twisted vision of black metal, clanging and crazed and almost accidentally avant-garde yet with a truly unique and malformed melodicism that nevertheless had those who had the good fortune to hear it questioning the band’s very sanity.

  • Wampirvs Sinistrvs (POR) – Blood of the Vampyre LP 26.88

Indeed, WAMPIRVS SINISTRVS honor the ancient ways of ’90s black metal vampirism, back before circus clowns ruined anything qualified as “vampiric” – when revered cults like France’s Vlad Tepes and America’s Black Funeral held sway over the diehard and dedicated. Blood of the Vampyre, as such, is thusly ruinous nostalgia ripped asunder: it seeks to supplant the rosiness of remembered times for ones rife with rot, decay, and general antagonism. This is utterly grim, remorselessly raw BLACK METAL for those who still march to the black holocaust and the throne of the beast – for those lost in time, out of time, their thirst for blood unquenched. That the record is thematically inspired by the 1922 expressionist film classic Nosferatu, Eine Symphonie des Grauens further underlines its exquisitely mildewed nature.
