It has been 23 years since “Verborgen in den Tiefen der Wälder” saw the darkness of the world. Atmospheric and also romantic black metal in the vein of old Satyricon or Gehenna. Nevertheless Bergthron developed their own dark and heathen atmosphere and the music doesn’t sound like a norse plagiarization. It was never about copying a group or bagging quick glory. Bergthron basically went on distance from the scene or never belonged to it also interviews were only given very rarely. It was a myth of the German black metal movement. Individuals who wanted to disconnect from normal society. As important as this release may have been, it never saw its existence on vinyl. “Verborgen in den Tiefen der Wälder” was originally released through Perverted Taste.

Widely considered one of the first “war metal” albums – if not THE first, actually – BESTIAL WARLUST’s debut was a shockingly violent and utterly barbaric slab of black metal that literally had no peer upon its release in 1994. It spawned countless imitators in the two decades since that original release and even furthered the “bestial metal” subgenre so prolific today, but there’s simply no substitute for the original – and HELLS HEADBANGERS couldn’t be prouder to reissue it alongside the second album, Blood & Valour. German black metal act formed in 1999 by multi-instrumentalists Machosias and B.S.oD. Machosias performed bass, drums and guitars on the album, enlisting help from fellow OLD PAGAN member Panzer Nidhogg for vocals and NELANDHIR member Freydagson for keyboards. The album is rooted somewhere between raw black metal and atmospheric black metal. The guitar riffs are enjoyable, with flowing tremolo riffing leading, creating a fuzzy wall of sound in the background that merges with the flourishes of atmospheric keyboard notes while the drumming sticks with fast paced double-bass runs and double-kick patterns, with a solid undercarriage of tremolo riffing and frenetic percussion. True black metal for true black metal fanatics.

And so it goes with the band’s sixth full-length, Esoteric Atavism. Ever aptly titled, Esoteric Atavism’s contents embody that title in a most provocative manner. While BLACK CILICE is esoteric in the extreme, more so is the entity atavistic, and indeed are those energies the cornerstone of this record. Characteristically coated in miles of miasmic rawness that’s an instrument unto itself, the lyrics of Esoteric Atavism delve into the OLD – old energies, old spiritually – and the music follows suit by reconstituting elements from elder BLACK CILICE recordings. Always in the red but now deeper into the black, that’s not to say Esoteric Atavism is a deliberate throwback or crass “return to the roots”; rather, the band’s birth pangs are given a deeper wisdom and wider-screened hysteria for the listener to drown himself in…or avoid, revoltingly stratifying as BLACK CILICE’s black metal may be. More pointedly, riffs are more forthright, with experimentation subtler, and songs in kind shorter: the proverbial ouroboros, then, forever feeding on the past.
