Hailing from the United Kingdom, REVENANT MARQUIS is a mysterious yet incredibly prolific entity. Having just revealed its first public work in 2018, the aptly titled Pitiless Black Emphasis album, two more full-lengths quickly followed, Polterngyst and Anti Universal Compassion, both in 2019. This trifecta of albums displayed a restless ghoul firmly in the grips of the rawest black metal possession, but dispensing with terror and truth with almost preternatural ease. Now making a blood pact with INFERNA PROFUNDUS, REVENANT MARQUIS adds to that canon of foulness with Youth in Ribbons.

While largely within the wider umbrella of black metal, RVBBERVVITCH’s unique expression nevertheless evades easy categorization – nor easy consumption. Guitars are harsh and cold, yet seemingly summoned from a post-apocalyptic crater rather than an amp; bass tones are mercilessly overdriven, grinding body and soul into the dirt; cutting out humanity altogether, both blastbeats and doomy stomps pump like pus from a Midi drum-machine; and sinister echoing soundscapes meld with malodorous French vocals, which demonically range heavily distorted screeches to low-pitched grunts. And whereas so many nowadays “black metal” bands play-act, the creator of RVBBERVVITCH matches content with form, life with art: the unconventional, largely taboo visual imagery is a reflection of the artist’s unabashedly hedonistic lifestyle.

Since their fiery formation in 2011, Germany’s SARKRISTA have upheld the banner of pure ‘n’ proud black metal in a most paradigmatic Finnish fashion – which is not surprising, given that the band consists of transplanted Finns. Nevertheless, whether you liken SARKRISTA’s sound to classic Finnish black metal or a newer breed of German black metal, the results are the same: a deadly devotion to Satanism and traditional black metal ideals, all conjured forth in a maelstrom of freezingly melodic fury. And the band have pursued that vision with a single-minded focus and clarity of execution for a prolific decade now.
