Featuring two stalwarts of the dungeon synth genre, this split also brings together Finland’s foremost purveyors of the resurgent style. DRUADAN FOREST, of course, should require little introduction for those who follow the banner of WEREWOLF RECORDS: in 2019 did mainman V-Khaoz (also of labelmates VARGRAV and GRIEVE) release the staggering atmospheric black metal monolith Dismal Spells From the Dragonrealm, and shared an all-dungeon-synth split album with THE TRUE WERWOLF in 2108. Here, DRUADAN FOREST deliver two epic-length tracks of the purest, most fantastical dungeon synth. Unlike so many two-note/one-loop charlatans, V-Khaoz’ dungeon synth creations are symphonies unto themselves, neither understated nor overstated, with fugue-like compositions revealing a wealth of adventure and mystery equally.

This garment is constituted beyond the nocturnal veil of the lunar forces and traditional mythology, the diabolical appearance of the sacred mirrors of the underworld and the cathartic transformation of the Being into the fiery beast, dominated by the venomous intellect and the perpetual cold of distant lands. Each of the hymns-legends has an auræs of old grimoires haunted by the sinister veil of the fullmoon whispers, wrapped by a completely different revelations and much more complex devilish orchestration than the beginnings of “Stronghold of Majestic Ruins” a refined but powerful setting that highlights the glorious reflections of the time of past hordes. Graveland’s style has changed from raw black metal on the early albums to a more epic sound which is inspired by Hammerheart-era Bathory. Lyrically, on the early works Rob Darken was inspired by Celtic beliefs, now he’s Wotanism-orientated and calls his music “epic pagan metal”.

Eight songs across 37 minutes are more than sufficient to paint the atmospheres and sensations that seemingly exist out of time. The album’s no less raw nor polished than it needs to be; rather, it IS, unyielding and undying.

It was but November 2018 when MORGAL fully burst onto the international scene with their self-titled EP for WEREWOLF. At the time, two of their members were not yet even into their 20s, which perhaps explains the exceptionally foul electricity coursing through the 15 shock & awe minutes of Morgal. And despite that young age, MORGAL brazenly exuded the ageless wisdom of true black METAL – so ageless, in fact, that you’d be forgiven for mistaking that EP as the work of very old men. Alas, Morgal was hailed far and wide by all who heard it, and the fever pitch for their true debut album has only grown in intensity.
